InAndrew C. C- Dereliction of duty as Commander-in-Chief.
Gary, the team captain, and Julius, his black roommate, got off to a rough start. In the beginning, each disliked the other intensely.
Gary and Julius treated each other as rivals rather than as teammates when they first met. It was when Coach Boone decided to put all the defensive players in one group separated from all the offensive players regardless of their skin color.
Because of the tension around the team, they thought that only one of them would play as a starting defensive lineman or linebacker, and the other will sit on the bench. On the other hand, Julius thought that Gary has the higher chance of getting the starting position on the defensive end since he is the team captain.
Both of them had hatred and fear in their eyes. During that time, they have never experienced hanging out or teaming up with someone who came from another race.
There was an extreme racial tension between Gary and Julius. They both lived their own separate lives, with their own race, and refused to interact with one another. It was clear that you could see in their eyes that they do not want to be on the same team. For this reason, it was not just about the color, and if you dig deeper, it was about the competition for the position on the team and the fear of losing and not playing for the team.
The confrontation between Gary and Julius: The episode when Gary and Julius had a confrontation could be considered as one of the game-changing plays in the movie. On that episode, Gary confronted Julius because he was playing selfish and making plays for himself on the field leaving the rest of his teammates vulnerable.
Because they have not blocked for him worth a blood nickel, and you know it! Gary realized that what Julius have said was true, and he admitted to himself that he is not acting like a true captain for the team.
He realized that he should be the one leading his teammates to bring the team together and solidify the bond around them. Gary ultimately becomes the team leader by learning to set aside his pride and not worry about the skin color.
The relationship developed between Gary and Julius led the way to the realization of the team that they should have trust to each other and they should possess the attitude of winning, regardless of their skin color. One example of someone who contributed to the success of overcoming the racial differences of the team was Louie.
Louie was often found with teammates of other races. During the first meal the team has together, he sits down next to players not of his race.
The idea that everyone should treat each other the same without looking on the outside is something that would have helped the Titans in the beginning. He felt a desire to get to know the other players before the challenge was issued by Coach Boone to do so.
Another example of someone who helped the Titans come close together as a team would be Sunshine. After kissing Gary, Petey talks to Sunshine during a meal asking him the question about his true identity, something that many other teammates possibly were wondering as well.
In the end, Sunshine and Gary had no future issues, and Petey became good friends with the man who messed with his mind, and the team as a whole accepted Sunshine for who he was.
Some team members even did some yoga with Sunshine at school. The characters who helped others recognize their blind spots: One example from the movie would be Gary and his mother, Jean Bertier.Remember the Titans is a film based on the true story of Coach Herman Boone, who tries to integrate a racially divided team.
