From an educational standpoint, the Ohio State band program is not alone in this development. Across the country, similar wind groups began as makeshift military bands, fashioned loosely in the style of traveling professional groups from the early twentieth century. As these bands became established campus ensembles, eventually serving the academic needs of music departments and schools, directors began to selectively model their programs on the philosophical and educational trends of the day.
These are pieces that I was introduced to by Orchestra teachers around the Eau Claire area. Russlan and Ludmilla, Overture - M.
Russlan and Ludmilla is a poem that was written by Alexander Pushkin in and Glinka based his opera off of this epic fairy tale. The piece is very interesting and I really enjoy listening to it. This work is specifically a string orchestra arrangement of the overture to the opera and is very vigorous and driving.
This piece could be technically challenging as there is a lot of shifting involved. However, I feel that students would love the opportunity to perform this work and would enjoy the challenge. The full orchestra group at Memorial High School is currently working on this piece, but I believe they are playing the original and not the arrangement.
This seems to be even more challenging, yet the students are enjoying themselves and seem to be excited about the piece. The arrangement, or the original if there is access to a full orchestra, are both great pieces for students.

Orange Jam — Jeffrey S. Orange Jam is a grade III piece written for string orchestra. The piece is both energetic and energizing and sounds like a lot of fun to play. It is in almost rock beat type style and very driving.
I think students would really enjoy this piece. The rhythm would definitely be a challenge. There is a lot of syncopation and odd rhythms. I addition, many rhythms are repeated and it might be easy for students to get lost in their music.
There are a lot of glissandos as well which I think students would really enjoy playing. Bayou Self — Cathy Morris Cathy Morris is primarily an electric violin performer and has made many recordings, yet is also an educator and composer and arranger.
I like this piece a lot and will definitely put it on a list to work with my future students on. The piece is very driving and exciting and incorporates some interesting elements stomping, etc!
The Cajun feel to this piece, along with the use of some familiar tunes, I think would be very motivating and appealing to young students.
There are glissando, feet stomping, as well as knocking and other elements that students would have a lot of fun with. In addition, the piece could be used in discussion about the Cajun culture and musical elements, and also has a wide range of dynamics, some meter changes, and tricky rhythms that would allow for building students technique and expression.
